Today, May 30, I wanted to send an email to Edit Doron. Only a few inquiries. For no reason, this mail had been repeatedly postponed. Today, looking for her email, she is a past faculty. So soon?! Then, checking her website, she passed away. So early. Terrible and sad news. I met Edit at the UTx, Austin, in 1979-80. Her fluency in French made things easier for me and my wife to communicate and exchange with her on many occasions. She was a quite special phd student. We were sorts of mature students... But she was sharp, very sharp, in her questions and opinions; never shy to express her own views on any issues, linguistic or else.

She had a genuine and characteristic style of her own. Somewhat -apparently- slow and (in Fr.) "d\'esinvolte" but so mature, so present, so intuitive, so intelligent and so in control. Her later achievements are no surprise. Still hearing the typical tone of her voice, her accent today... A short encounter in life but a great place in my memories. Never postpone a mail to an old friend, even forty years later.

I had the opportunity to meet and spend a little time with Edit when I was at HUJI for a few weeks teaching a mini-course. She made a big impression on me. What a pleasure it was to have even those brief interactions. Edit came to the seminar and had the most insightful things to say. And it was a very proud moment for me when she applied Nino Grillo's and my tests for Pseudo-relatives to Hebrew and discovered the language may actually have such a construction with the same semantic restrictions! It lead to a MA thesis directed by her that I was very excited to evaluate. And I was fed too: a wonderful home-cooked shabbat dinner and also a very, very chic restaurant date.

Brilliant Edit was deeply generous to me both personally and professionally even though I did not know her well at all; from my small experience of her, everything Malka said rings profoundly true. Edit wanted to really understand my way of thinking about our scientific issues of overlapping concern; she wasn't just interested in helping me understand her own (much more developed and precise) ways of thinking about them. Her sheer enthusiasm for the linguistic enterprise and for intellectual combat -- she was kind of a Valkyrie of linguistic discussion -- freed me to engage in elucidating debate without concern that I was overstepping boundaries or exposing ignorance. She invited me to Israel and invited me into her home when I needed a place to stay in Jerusalem and helped me strike a better deal for a souvenir hookah after a series of hilarious (in retrospect) events left me deprived of the one I'd gotten at a ridiculously high price in Ben Gurion. She invited me to submit a target article to Theoretical Linguistics and shepherded thirteen of our colleagues through the process of replying to it, definitely one of the publications that fits into the category Malka described (as relayed to me by Google Translate): "there are also countless studies published over the years which would not have come into the world and been published without Edit's investment of interest, time, and attention." I did not know of Edit's illness, and so her death came as a complete shock; I had thought for sure we would get to have another round of discussions about whatever topics came across the transom at some point. Thank you, Edit, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing your ideas, and your passion for them, with me and our field.

I did not have the honour of knowing Edit personally. But as an editor, I asked her many times to do reviews for Lingua and then Glossa. Editors are not supposed to divulge information about their reviewers. But I feel that now I can. In addition to her personal qualities as a scholar, she was one of the best reviewers an editor can wish for, with that rare combination of qualities that make it possible to guarantee the highest quality in academic publishing. She was intellectually generous with ideas, always encouraging, unusually perspicuous, and, above all, very punctual about sending in reviews in time. The field has lost a great scholar and a great colleague.

Edit was a fine colleague and a cherished friend over many years. She embodied unique intellectual integrity and remarkable depth of scholarly insight. She pursued her own path in all matters, with wisdom and decency. Her quiet independence of judgement was an inspiration to me. In addition to her seminal contributions to linguistics in general, and to Semitic linguistics in particular, I will always remember Edit as a very special person who enriched the lives of everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.

I was Edit's TA in 1994. During that year, my husband passed away. Despite the fact that I lived in a התנחלות, to which she was strongly opposed, she came to pay her condolences -- which touched me no end.

A while later, she decided that she and I would have a weekly lunch together to discuss politics, as she couldn't understand how anybody could support rightist views. The discussions were challenging, to say the least (she was one of the smartest people I knew) and I learned a lot about leftist views, but what I will always remember is the true respect and honest curiosity with which she listened to me, as well as the thirst for learning about the 'other side' and her ability to concede. A true intellectual.

In May 2018, a workshop was held in the memory of Professor Irit Meir, a dear friend of Edit's. Edit gave a talk at the opening session. She started the talk by speaking about her deep friendship and intellectual collaboration with Irit. With tears in her eyes and a quivering voice, she spoke about the pain of Irit's absence and how much she wanted to ask Irit questions and to share ideas with her. Hearing her words, I felt a pain of identification, an unconscious fear from a similar sense of pain.

Edit is my teacher, my guide, my mentor and my role model. I admire her as a researcher, as a lecturer, and most of all, as a person. She has been a central presence in my life from my very first year of studying linguistics, a growing influence on my studies, my way of thought, and my personal growth. I have hoped and worked for her approval, her smile, her sparks of insight, and her sharp criticism. Her loss is a state of profound loneliness, of constantly asking the question:

How can one move on?

The best teachers don't make their students dependent on them; they provide the tools and encouragement for their students to grow in both ability and self-confidence. Edit planted in many circles and generations of scholars and students her passion and insights, and provided material for the intellectual and spiritual growth of the Linguistics community.

Her nature as a true leader has been demonstrated even more so in her absence, which rather than shattering the community, led to students and researchers coming together to honor the inspiration she gave them. I am grateful to have the opportunity to learn from Edit about the power of collaboration with a group, which gives me strength to keep going in the path through which she guided me, and wishing to pursue my goals.
